「ハグしてほしい」or 「抱きしめてほしい」

「ハグしてほしい」sounds more casual.
「抱きしめてほしい」sounds a lot more serious.

@Breadcrumbs So the first one is casual in sort of cute way and the second one is more like "I feel really bad I need hugs" or the second one just sounds more formal?

@sannirr That's one way of understanding it. It's probably a cultural thing, but hugging someone is not a common practice in Japan, so「抱きしめる」sounds too serious and a little embarrassing to say it out loud. Depending on the context it can sound a little sexual, too. A lot of Japanese (especially the younger generations) probably started to use 「ハグ」 instead as it sounds a lot more casual and less embarrassing to say it out loud. Hope this helps :)
