I got it, you meant 아파요 (not 아빠요).
슬프다
아프다
ㅡ in 프 is removed, so vewel harmony applies to preceding vowels.
슬 has yin(dark) vowel, so takes yin vowel 어요, 슬퍼요.
아 has yang(bright) vowel, so takes yang vowel 아요, 아파요.

왜 "슬프다" "슬퍼요" 된다. 나는 "슬파요" 말했었을 거야.

why does "슬퍼요" turn into "슬퍼요" and not "슬파요"? i would have said 슬파요, with a 아, because of the other exceptions like 아빠요.
